Richard Synge Richard Laurence Millington Synge (1914-1994) investigated paper chromatography, a means of separating mixtures.

Short Biography:

By 1940 techniques of chromatography for separating proteins had been devised. Still lacking were comparable techniques for distinguishing the amino adds that constituted the proteins.

By 1944, Synge and his colleague Archer Martin had worked out a procedure, known as ascending chromatography, which filled this gap and won them the 1952 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
