He is the son of Beti Wyn a nursery school teacher and Eirwyn Evans, a primary school teacher. His first language in school was Welsh. He grew up in Ruthin, in North Wales. He attended a Welsh language secondary school in Flintshire.He acted in many Welsh language television programs before beginning his acting career. He used to sing for the rock band Super Fury Animals.
He became famous world wide because of his role as Spike in the movie Notting Hill in 1999. For this role it is said that he did not wash nor brush his teeth, as he was busy preparing for his role. A few of his other movies are Eyeball Paul in Kevin and Perry Go Large (2000
