Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1946-1982) was an West German film director, who began his career as a fringe actor and founded his own 'anti-theatre' before moving into films.
His works are mainly stylized indictments of contemporary German society. He made over 30 films, including Die bitteren Tranen der Petra von Kant/The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant in 1972 and Die Ehe von Maria Braun / The Marriage of Maria Braun in 1979.
