Short Biography:
His works include six symphonies; three piano concertos and a violin concerto; operas (for example, Eugene Onegin in 1879); ballets (for example The Nutcracker in 1892); orchestral fantasies (for example Romeo and Juliet in 1870); and chamber and vocal music.
Professor of harmony at Moscow in 1865, he later met OBalakirev, becoming involved with the nationalist movement in music. He was the first Russian composer to establish a reputation with Western audiences.
