Pink Floyd Pink Floyd are an rock band from England who achieved global recognition that was famous for its their psychedelic and progressive rock music.

Career:

Their songs are known for their philosophical lyrics, experimentation with sounds of varied kinds, innovative album art, and detailed live shows. Pink Floyd are a critically acclaimed and commercially successful rock music bands. It is said with sound estimated that they have achieved sales of over 200 million copies globally, including 74.5 million copies in the United States alone.

The band initially was made up of college students named Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Syd Barrett. They started in the year 1965. They became popular initially playing in London's underground music theatre in the early 1970s. Un der Barrett's guidance they came out with two singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", and a sensational album called The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967).

The lead Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd before Barrett's departure from the group because of problems with mental health in the year 1968.

Following the departure of their main lyricist, singer Roger Waters became the band's lyrics writer and brainy leader, with Gilmour taking over lead guitar and also doing lead vocals. This group, the new Pink Floyd achieved global commercial success with albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall.

Pink Floyd have recorded sales of over 200 million copies all over the planet, including 74.5 million certified units in the United States alone. Their success is shown in their ranking in the Sunday Times Rich List in the year 2009 which ranks Roger Walters at No. 657 with an estimated wealth of £85m, Gilmour at No. 742 with £78m, and Mason at No. 1077 with £50m.

Many artists are known to have been inspired by Pink Floyd's work. David Bowie has called the member Syd Barrett a big inspiration. A teenage boy , The Edge (of U2 fame) purchased his first delay pedal after listening the opening to the famous number Animals and the Pet Shop Boys paid deed to The Wall during a live performance in Boston. Marillion lead guitarist Steve Rothery has mentioned the song Wish You Were Here as a major inspiration in his life.
