P. J. Patterson Percival Noel James Patterson (born in 1935) as deputy prime minister to Michael Manley, he survived a scandal over tax concessions to an oil company to become prime minister when Manley resigned through ill health in 1992.

He won a landslide victory in the March 1993 general election, establishing himself as the nation's leader in his own right.
