Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde was born on 16 October 1854 in Dublin, Ireland and died on 30 November 1900, at the age of 46, in Paris, France. He was an Irish playwright, short story writer, poet and journalist.

Biography and Career:

Oscar Wilde lived between 1854 and 1900. Coming from a family of intellectuals from Dublin, he started from an early age to show his talent in writing and his intelligence. He was fluent in German and French and an outstanding classicist at Dublin and Oxford.

After he graduated, Oscar Wilde tried various writing forms: he wrote and published a poems book and politically journalism. He became very popular since his days, thanks to his glittering conversation and his biting wit. His only novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey, brought him a lot of recog nition and still it is widely read.

Oscar Wilde wrote some social satires, including The Importance of Being Earnest, which continues to be performed in these days too. When he was at the height of his fame, he suffered a tragic downfall in a strange series of trials. He was being convicted for gross indecency with other men and made hard labour for two years.

While he was in prison, he wrote a counterpoint of his pleasure's philosophy, named De Profundis. After he was released, he decided never come back in Ireland or Britain. In France, he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
