Oliver Cromwell

Oliver CromwellOliver Cromwell was born on April 25, 1599 in Huntingdon, England. He was an English military and political leader best known for making England a republic and leading the Commonwealth of England.

Biography and Career :

He was the best soldier in the battle at Master Moor, nearby York. The battle took place in 1644 and the Parliament was the winner in the war against the King Carol Stuart.

In 1628, Oliver Cromwell had been chosen as depute in the English Parliament. His image was the image of a passionate puritan. He was obsessed by the idea of having a roll-model army.

He inspired a rigorous discipline, being an authoritary leader. He thought soldiers, not politicians, should rule the army. After the "Self Denying Ordinance", the army was under the command of Sir Thom as Fairfax. His lieutenant was Oliver Cromwell. Oxford was defeated and Carol ran away. Therefore, the Parliament won again.

The army then ruled England: 30000 soldiers under the command of Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell. He didn't agree military dictature, but since Presbyterian Parliament didn't let Christians live the way they wanted to, he decided to join the army in the war against the Parliament. So, 20000 English soldiers, under the command of Oliver Cromwell wanted the religions freedom. The Parliament refused it. The 11 members of the Parliament had to run away. There was a new party in the army: the levelers. They spread the Republican doctrine.

After Carol had run away from Hampton Cour on November 11, there took place some several quarrels between the soldiers under the command of Oliver Cromwell.

The rebels were defeated by Oliver Cromwell. He also won the 2nd war against Carol in 1648. If the king died, a breakdown became between the army and a piece of the Parliament. England had to become a commonwealth.

Oliver Cromwell succeeded in gathering Ireland and Scotland under the Union of Great Britain, after he had banished Carol II from the throne of England. He became very popular that time.

On April 20, 1653, the old Parliament had vanished away and a new Parliament was to rule England-The Parliament of Barebones. A new Constitution was voted.

Other important measures for the wealth of England were taken by Oliver Cromwell: the Act of Navigation in 1651, the peace with Holland in 1654. He also took Jamaica from Spain in order to fortificate Gibraltar.

The external politics of Oliver Cromwell was a most popular one. He soon became the owner of three kingdoms all around the Europe. His enemies then were only his ex-friends. Oliver Cromwell passed away in 1658 saying: "My work is fulfilled".
