Nicolas Appert (1750-1841), devised a system of sealing food in glass bottles and subjecting it to heat.
Short Biography:
His book "Van de conserver les substances animates et vegetales" appeared in 1810.
Shortly after, others employed the same principles to iron or sheet steel containers plated with tin.
