Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born in 1918) was organizer of the then banned ANC, he was imprisoned 1964. In prison he became a symbol of unity for the worldwide anti-apartheid movement.
Short Biography:
In February 1990 he was released, the ban on the ANC having been lifted, and he entered into negotiations with the government about a multiracial future for South Africa.
In September 1992, Mandela and President de Klerk agreed to hasten the creation of an interim government under which reforms could take place, and in February 1993 agreed to the formation of a government of national unity after free, nonracial elections (later scheduled for April 1994).
In September 1993 Mandela urged the international community to lift sanctions. He launched his personal campaign for the presidency Jan 1994 and was elected president in May 1994.
Mandela married the South African civil-rights activist Winnie Mandela in 1955 (the couple separated in 1992). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace (jointly with de Klerk) in 1993.
