Mugur Isarescu was born on August 1st, 1949 in Dragasani, Valcea. He is a famuos Romanian academician, economist and the governor of the National Bank of Romania.

Biography and Career :

He graduated the Faculty of Economic Studies in Bucharest and after that he started working at the International Economic Institute and he is working there ever since.

After the 1989 Revolution he worked at the External Affaires Minister (at the U.S.A. Romanian Embassy), and from September 2000 he is the governor of the National Bank.

In December 16, 1999 he became prime-minister of Romania, but after one year the leading coalition lost the elections in November 2000. After that he returned at the National Bank for another year as governor. As governor of the Romanian National Bank, Mugu r Isarescu has coordinated Romania's economic policy since 1990, being considered by some the hidden Prime Minister of the country.

He is the only Romanian politician that is a member of the Trilateral Commission.

His role in the Romanian economy is compared with the one of Laszcek Balcerowicz in the implementation of the Polish reforms. Many credit the National Bank Isarescu's team for saving Romania's economy from a Bulgarian-type collapse, raising the national gold and Euro reserves beyond needs, cutting down inflation to single-digit figures and introducing the New Leu.

He was the prime-minister of Romania between December 1999 and November 2000.
