
Mona Maris, was an Argentine film actress, born on Saturday, November 07, 1903 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Biography and Career:
Her mother was a Spanish Basque and her father a French Basque. Maris was educated in England, France, and Germany and by the age of nineteen she spoke four languages. Maris was inspired to become an actress during World War I, when she was a student in Luders, France. She and her classmates together acted, directed and presented short films. During her stay in France she understood that in England ladies are given more freedom than in South America and even in Spain so she urged to stay back in England and her mother agreed.
She was there to stay for six months but she extended it yet another two years. She was introduced to the President of the
United Film Association which resulted in her travel to Germany, a successful screen test and at last a five-year contract.
The president of United Artists, Joe Schenck, offered her the opportunity of being a Hollywood actress. At this time she had completed four films and he reached Hollywood on the 31st of December, 1928. Her first film in Hollywood was The Apache in the year 1925
Her inability to speak fluent English hampered her career . The languages Spanish, French, and German came easily for her, in the starting years for talkies, her English was almost unintelligible. From 1931 until 1941 she starred in nineteen Spanish-language versions of successful American pictures, In 1940 she appeared in a nazi propaganda film The Eternal Jew.
She was married two times. She died of lung disease in Buenos Aires on March 23, 1991.
