Ahmadzai Najibullah (1947-1996) was a member of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) since his youth, allying himself to its gradualist Parcham (banner) faction.
He became head of the KHAD (secret police) after the Soviet invasion of 1979 and party leader in 1986. Elected state president in 1987, Najibullah attempted initially to broaden support for the PDPA regime within a coalition, but since the Soviet military withdrawal in 1989 he has ruled in a beleaguered, emergency manner.
