She was raised by her parents, Maria and Horatio. They had moved to the USA from Mexico to play in their orchestra at the Siroco Club in New York
By the age of 14, Melissa had already joined her parent's orchestra as lead vocalist and, soon, wrote her own songs and played them on the piano. She was also fond of dancing and took classes in ballet, jazz, mambo, contemporary dance and hip-hop.
She mesmerised people with her performance and sang classical music at Apollo Theater in Harlem, as well as at St. Patrick's Cathedral
, New York
. There she sang "Amazing Grace" on the eve of a 9/11 Memorial Service. She also featured in the video of the song "Daddy Get That Cash" by rapper Styles P.
As part of her hip-hop career, Melissa has worked with labels like Sugar Hill, Jay-Z
