Mathieu Kerekou (born in 1933) is a former Benin socialist politician and soldier, president from 1980. Short Biography:
In 1972, when deputy head of the Dahomey army, he led a coup to oust the ruling president and establish his own military government.
He embarked on a programme of "scientific socialism", changing his country's name to Benin to mark this change of direction. Re-elected president 1984, in 1987 he resigned from the army and confirmed a civilian administration.
