He coined the phrase "the medium is the message", meaning that the form rather than the content of information is crucial.
His works include The Gutenberg Galaxy in 1962 (in which he coined the phrase "the global village" for the modern electronic society), Understanding Media in 1964, and The Medium is the Massage (sic) in 1967.
