Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was an American painter, born in Russia, an Abstract Expressionist and a pioneer of Colour Field painting (abstract, dominated by areas of unmodulated, strong colour).
Short Biography:
Rothko produced a number of series of paintings in the 1950s and 1960s, including one at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; one for the Tate Gallery, London; and his own favourite 1967-1969 for a chapel in Houston, Texas.
