Marcus Antonius, (83-30 BC) was tribune and later consul under Julius Caesar, serving under him in Gaul.
Short Biography:
In 44 he tried to secure for Caesar the title of king. After Caesar's assassination, he formed the Second Triumvirate with Octavian (Augustus) and Lepidus.
In 42 he defeated Brutus and Cassius at Philippi. He took Egypt as his share of the empire and formed a liaison with Cleopatra. In 40 he returned to Rome to marry Octavia, the sister of Augustus.
In 32 the Senate declared war on Cleopatra. Antony was defeated by Augustus at the battle of Actium in 31. He returned to Egypt and committed suicide.
