Mario Soares (born in 1924) was exiled in 1970, he returned to Portugal in 1974, and as leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PSP) was prime minister 1976-1978.
He resigned as party leader in 1980, but in 1986 he was elected Portugal's first socialist president.
