Maria Tanase was born on September 25, 1913 in the Bucharest suburb of Caramidari, Romania. She was Romanian singer of traditional and popular music.

Biography and Career :

Her parents were fans of the Romanian folklore. So, the child Maria Tanase knew music since an early age.

Her debut on the stage was at first in 1921 in Caramidarii de Jos and then on the stage of Ion Heliade Radulescu high school. Later on, the newspaper writer Sandu Eliad adviced her to value her artistic talent at the theatre "Constantin Tanase".

Her debut in the magazine "Carabus Expres" took place on June 2, 1934, with the stage name-Mary Atanasiu.

Maria Tanase became famous in 1938 when she made her first songs for the Romanian society of Radio. The songs were destroyed by the Iron Guard i n 1940.

The Iron Guard was fighting against pornography also and since Maria Tanase was playing chess being nude, they made her disappear from the artistic stage in Romania.

She represented Romania at the Worldwide Exhibition in Paris in 1938. Together with G. Enescu, G. Vraca and C-tin Tanase, she organized a series of shows for the injured soldiers on the battlefield.

In 1955, Maria Tanase was awarded the Prize of the State. In 1957 she was also awarded the title of "Emerited Artist". She passed away on June 22, 1963, remaining one of the famous singer of folklore in Romania.

Trivia :

- She had a part in the plays The Living Dead by Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoi in 1945 and Horia by Mihai Davidoglu in 1956.
- She held the main part in the musical comedy The Hollywood Sphinx, by Ralph Benatzky in 1946.
- Her creative artistry in Romanian folk song was honored with the medals Ordinul Muncii, Premiul de Stat, and the title Artista Emerita.
