Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall Marc Chagall (real name Mark Zakharovich Shagalov) was born on July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk, Belarus. He is a famous Jewish painter.

Biography and Career :

Marc Chagall was the first of nine children of Zakhar and Fajga Segal. Chagall's parents are poor people and faithful. They spent their time in a neighborhood meant to the Jewish people. Although his parents were illiterates he learned to write and read.

Marc Chagall learned to play the violin and one day he told his mother he wanted to be a painter. At first she was scared but she took him to professor Iehuda Pen who saw his talent and accepted him as a student.

A friend of him went to Petersburg to study and when Chagall heard he wanted to go too. His father told him he didn't have money but he said he didn't care, he c ould bear hungry. He went to Petersburg but it wasn't easy to get a special permission to stay because the Jewish weren't received. He finally got one and became the student of Nikolai Roerich. In capital he also met deputy Maxim Vinaver who will protect him.

The artist continued later his studies in Lev Bakst, in Svansev School.
In 1909 he went to Paris and continued studying under the guidance of Mstislav Dobujinski. He finished his studies thanks to Vinaver and for four years his fiancee, Bella Rosenfeld, waited him in Vitebsk.

When he lived in Paris he didn't have much money. During the night he painted and when the day came he went to study. He met there Max Jacob, Andre Salmon, Guillaume Apollinaire, Robert Delaunay and his wife Sonia.
In 1912 thanks to Delauny and Henri Le Fauconnier his works are received in The Autumn Saloon.

In 1914 he went to Russia after he had an exposition in Berlin and because of the war he stayed for eight years.

On the 25th of July 1915 he married Bella and in 1916 they gave birth to Ida.
They left Russia in 1922 and stayed for some time in Berlin, but in 1923 they decided to remain in France.

In 1931 he published his autobiography "Ma vie".

The Chagall family arrived in 1941 in New York and on the 2nd of September 1944 Bella passed away.

In 1945 he met Virginia Haggard and their son David was born in 1947. Five years later in 1952 Marc met Valentina Brodski and married her on the 12th of July.

Chagall passed away on the 28th of March 1985 in Sain-Paul-de-Vence.
