Biography and Career
MamieVan Doren was born as Joan Lucille Olander in Rowena, South Dakota. She is daughter of Warner Carl Olander and Lucille Harriet Bennett.
She started her career in 1946 and began working as an usher at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.
In the same year she had a part on an early television show. Later on Van Doren did a few more bit parts in movies at RKO including His Kind of Woman released in 1951. Van Doren then began working on the stage. She was a showgirl in New York in Monte Proser's nightclub.
In 1953, Van Doren signed a contract with Universal Studios. In 1953, her first movie for Universal was Forbidden in which she played a role of a singer. She
then made All American in 1953, playing role of Susie Ward.
In 1954, she appeared in Yankee Pasha starring Jeff Chandler and Rhonda Fleming. She played a slave girl, Lilith. She played opposite a pre fame Clint Eastwood in Star in the Dust released in 1956.
Several of Van Doren's more noteable movies include Teacher's Pet in 1958 at Paramount, Born Reckless in 1958 at Warner Bros., High School Confidential in1958, and The Beat Generation in 1959. As Van Doren's career progressed, many of the productions she starred in were low budget B movies.
They are largely unknown to later generations though some have gained a following for their high camp value so in 1959, Universal chose not to exercise option in her contract.
Van Doren has been married five times; sportswear manufacturer Jack Newman, then to a bandleader, composer and actor Ray Anthony in 1955, baseball player Lee Meyers, businessman Ross McClintock, married in 1972 and actor Thomas Dixon married in 1979. She and Anthony have a son, Perry Ray Anthony.
