Maggie Rizer was born on January 9, 1978 and she is an American model and AIDS activist. In addition to appearing in ad campaigns for Calvin Klein, Max Mara & Versace, she has walked the catwalk for Victoria's Secret and shot editorials with Steven Meisel.
Biography and Career :
Maggie Rizer is currently one of fashion's hottest models, particularly with those in the know. Maggie's image is that of the all-American fresh-faced girl next door, groomed within an inch of her life.
Maggie Rizer slips easily into the role of the sporty-looking socialite she portrays in Arthur Elgort's Palm Beach Story in February American Vogue. Maggie Rizer's appeal is akin to that of actress Gwyneth Paltrow - in her blonde incarnation - but minus Paltrow's icy perfection.
Maggie Rizer is
a model who shot straight to the top of her profession; her first job was shooting a story with uber photographer, Steven Meisel for Italian Vogue. There is one obvious difference that is immediately apparent when one speaks with her; she lacks the attitude of the supermodels who came before her in the early 90's. What is important to her is behaving professionally, and being treated with respect.
Maggie Rizer is unconcerned about any misconceptions people may have of her now that she's famous and does not feel the need to put up a front for anyone. Maggie Rizer freely admits her lack of knowledge of the business when she began modeling. Maggie Rizer is known for her uncanny ability to change her appearance in her photos, making herself almost unrecognizable.
It started when her mother, Maureen Breen, sent Maggie's pictures to Ford because she'd heard it was an important agency. Maggie Rizer did one or two tests but wasn't really interested; she wanted to go to college. Maggie Rizer's booker and later-on close personal friend, Louie Chaban, had moved over to Ford and called her, to no avail.
Maggie Rizer's Favourites :
Favorite Designers :
Prada, "I love everything about it. I love Miuccia - she's such an amazing designer, if she doesn't like something, that's it - that outfit doesn't make it into the collection. She's not afraid to take the leap. The team is really nice too." Gucci: "The clothes make you feel amazing, they change the way you feel." Michael Kors: "He's so nice and funny and actually cares about the clothes and the people he works with." Also: Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui
Favorite Photographers :
Photographers she loves are: Steven Meisel, Craig McDean, Patrick DeMarchelier, Irving Penn, and Inez van Lamsweerde. Unquestionably, at the top of her list is Meisel, who has been instrumental in her career, as he has been with a pantheon of so many girls before her including: Linda Evangelista, Shana of Guess Jean fame, and more recently, Guinevere Van Seenus and Elsa Benitez.
Meisel encouraged her to get a new look right before the Spring 2000 shows last September and to debut it on the NY runways, ensuring her maximum exposure. It is clear that she trusts him implicitly when it comes to making stylistic decisions. "It's great working with Steven because we can create something new when we shoot - the hair and makeup are so intense, he's very involved in the hair and makeup."
Maggie Rizer followed Meisel's advice and surprised a lot of people and traded-in her long strawberry blonde hair for a surfer boy shag haircut, courtesy of Garren. Garren hair colorist, Andre, is responsible for the Barbie blonde shade that she's currently wearing. Happily, the response professionally to her new look has been outstanding, although personally, she prefers her hair long.
Although Maggie Rizer wouldn't commit to saying what her favorite job so far has been, Maggie was very pleased with the American Vogue couture sitting she just shot with Irving Penn. Maggie Rizer left the grueling four day job, in which she was the only model, every day feeling that she really did love the pictures.
After Maggie Rizer's first year of college, one semester at R.I.T., and one at Genesco University in upstate New York, Louie called again, this time relaying the message that Steven Meisel wanted to shoot her for Italian Vogue. After shooting three stories together as well as the coveted September Italian Vogue cover, (in 1997), Maggie Rizer decided to stay in Manhattan to see what would happen. Plenty happened in the next two years with Chaban's help, and Maggie Rizer is quick to give him credit.
As many other models, her loyalty lies with that one person who has supported her from the start, before Maggie Rizer became a name. In these past two and a half years, the list of designers and photographers she's worked with reads like a who's who of fashion.
