Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong (1901-1971) was an American jazz trumpet player and singer, born in New Orleans, the first solo jazz virtuoso.
Short Biography:
He is credited with the invention of scat singing (meaningless syllables chosen for their sound).
His Chicago recordings in the 1920's with the Hot Five and Hot Seven made him known for his warm and pure trumpet tone, his improvisation and gravelly voice.
In 1923 Armstrong joined the Creole Jazz Band led by the comet player Joe "King" Oliver (1885-1938) in Chicago, but soon broke away and fronted various lineups of his own.
From the 1930s he became equally widely known as a singer and entertainer.
In 1947 he formed the Louis Armstrong All Stars and gained wide popularity.
