Louis-Francois Roubiliac (c.1705-1762) became a leading sculptor of the day, creating a statue of Handel for Vauxhall Gardens in 1737 (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) and teaching at St. Martin's Lane Academy from 1745.
He also produced lively statues of historic figures, such as Newton, and an outstanding funerary monument, the Tomb of Lady Elizabeth Nightingale in 1761 (Westminster Abbey, London).
