Lorne Michaels (full name Lorne David Lipowitz) was born on November 17, 1944, in Toronto, Ontario. After studying at the University of Toronto, he worked in radio programmes for CBC. He moved to Los Angeles and began writing comedy scripts. He wrote for shows like Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show.
In 1970, he took up the job of producing and acting int he show The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour and it was on air for 2 seasons. He earned his first Emmy by writing for actress Lily Tomlin. After that, Along with Dick Ebersol, he launched the show NBC's Saturday Night in 1975 which later on came to be known as Saturday Night Live. It was a huge hit but Lorne Michaels had to leave the show in 1980 for argum
ents regarding his contract.
For a short time, he began a show named The New Show, but after it failed, Michaels came back to Saturday Night Live five years later. After he returned, the ratings of Saturday Night Live rocketed upwards.
He produced a movie based on SNL's Wayne's World. The movie became a huge hit and other movies produced by Lorne Michaels followed which include A Night at the Roxbury, Tommy Boy and Mean Girls. The list also included 2008's Baby Mama.
While Saturday Night Live was running successfully, Lorne Michaels also worked as executive producer on TV shows including The Kids in the Hall, 30 Rock and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
