Biography and Career
Born the fourth of six children, Kate was the daughter of Josephine Alice and Patrick Joseph Nelligan. Kate attended London South Collegiate Institute in London, Ontario, before going on to study at Glendon College. However, before she graduated from Glendon College, she switched to the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, United Kingdom.
Her stage debut came when was 22 years old, in Bristol, England, appearing in a regular role on a British television series 'The Onedin Line'. 1974 saw her playing in David Hare's 'Knuckle' at the Comedy Theatre, and then a season at the National Theatre Company: Ellie in 'Heartbreak House'
Kate went on to appear in many other televised plays a
nd feature films including 'The Count of Monte Cristo' (1975), 'The Romantic Englishwoman' (1975), 'Tales from Vienna Woods' (1977), 'As You Like It' (1977) and 'Plenty' (1978), for which she received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a New Play.
She received a notable comment when she played the part of Isabella in 'Measure for Measure', a BBC Television Shakespeare production. In 1983, Kate moved on to New York City, and received nominations for 4 Tony Award Best Actress between 1983 and 1989 from her appearance in 5 broadway plays. 1991 saw her being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 'The Prince of Tides'. Her more recent films include 'How to Make an American Quilt' (1995), 'Margaret's Museum' (1995) and portrayed Robert Redford's ex-wife in 'Up Close and Personal' (1996).
