Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) was a German composer of avant-garde music, who has continued to explore new musical sounds and compositional techniques since the 1950s.
His major works include Gesang der Junglinge in 1956 and Kontakte in 1960 (electronic music); Klavierstiicke 1952-1985; Momente 1961-1964, revised in 1972, Mikrophonie I in 1964, and Sirius in 1977.
Since 1977 all his works have been part of Licht, a cycle of seven musical ceremonies, intended for performance on the evenings of a week. He has completed Donnerstag in 1980, Samstag in 1984, and Montag in 1988.
