Kara DioGuardi was born in New Rochelle, New York. She is the daughter of politician Joseph J. DioGuardi. She is a BA in political Science from Duke University. After her grads, Kara had worked for the Billboard Magazine.

Her work at the Billboard Magazine was in the role of an assistant, though later she got promoted to advertising sales. But Kara dreamt of her career in music artist. Eventually, she took to writing songs out of her own feelings.
In 1995, she recorded a demo of her song "Spinning Around" with MCA. When Kylie Minogue heard the demo, she was amazed with it and asked for Kara's consent to record the song. Later on, she wrote songs for the like of
