Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1922-1999) was originally a teacher, he devoted himself from 1954 to the formation of the Tanganyika African National Union and subsequent campaigning for independence. Short Biography:
He became chief minister in 1960, was prime minister of Tanganyika (1961-1962), president of the newly formed Tanganyika Republic (1962-1964), first president of Tanzania (1964-1985), and head of the Organization of African Unity in 1984.
