Juan Domingo Peron (1895-1974) took part in the military coup in 1943, and his popularity with the descamisados ("shirtless ones") led to his election as president in 1946.
Short Biography:
He instituted social reforms, but encountered economic difficulties. After the death of his second wife Eva Peron he lost popularity, and was deposed in a military coup in 1955. He returned from exile to the presidency in 1973, but died in office in 1974, and was succeeded by his third wife Isabel Peron.
