Joni Mitchell (full name Roberta Joan Anderson) was born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta.
Biography and Career:
Her early childhood was spent in moving from place to place as her father was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They finally made Saskatchewan their hometown when Joni was 11.
She had developed an interest in music when she was very young, and she had started taking piano lessons from the age of 7. Two years later, she had to make a long stay at a hospital. There she kept herself distracted by singing Christmas carols. That was how her talent in singing was discovered. She learned guitar as a teenager and played family and friends parties. Gradually, she started playing at local events. After completing her high school, Joni entered Alberta Colle
ge of Art and Design. But she dropped out to follow music as her career.
After a troublesome personal life, involving giving away her newborn for adoption, and a divorce with her folk singer husband Chud Mitchell, Joni spent her time playing in small clubs and coffee houses in the US and Canada. At one such show in Florida, she met
David Crosby. He took her to Los Angeles and introduced her to big names in the music industry. Combining her songwriting skills with her beautiful voice, her music was covered by the top contemporary artists.
She recorded two albums in 1968 and 1969. They were her debut album Song to a Seagull and Clouds. Though they didnt generate many sales, but these albums established her in the folk arena. The next year, in 1970, she released her third album Ladies of the Canyon. The album produced to famous singles, Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock.
She toured exhaustively in the 70s and released an album every year, except 1973 and 1978. The 80s werent that productive for her. But , by that time, she had become a respected artist in the folk scene. Joni Mitchell married
Larry Klein in 1982 and it resulted in some famous albums, including Dog Eat Dog of 1986.
But she hasnt entirely gone out of the music. The proof came with the release of Shine on September 25, 2007 under the record label of Starbucks.
