
Jokai Mor was born on the 18th of February 1825 in Komarom (today Komárno, Slovakia). He was a Hungarian novelist and dramatist.
Biography and Career :
His father was a member of the Asva branch of the ancient Jókay family and his mother was a scion of the noble Pulays.
In 1836 he was a "child of exchange" in Bratislava.
One year later in 1837 the writer’s father, Joseph, passed away.
Between 1841 and 1842 he attended classes of Law School in Kecskemet. There he met Petofi and wrote the drama "the Young Jewish".
In 1844 Jokai came back home in Komarom and worked at his first novel.
Next year he went to Budapest and did the probation period in the lawyer Molnar Jozsef's bureau. He also published the novella "The Nepean Island".
The writer received the lawyer di
ploma in 1846 and published fragments of the novel "Weekdays".
In 1847 he was editor at the Life's Images magazine.
One year late in 1848 took place the revolution in Pesta. Mor wrote "The Proclamation", took part at the manifestations, spoke at the meetings, occupied a printing work and published "The Proclamation".
He married the actress, Róza Benke Laborfalvi, on the 29th of August 1848.
In 1850 he published "Pictures of Revolution and Fight".
It appeared the novels "Carinus", "Turkish world in Hungary" and "A Hungarian nabob" in 1853.
In 1855 appeared the novel "From the Old Days of Hungarians".
The writer created the Nagy Tukor Magazine and published "Sad Days" in 1856.
In 1858 appeared "Jokai Mor’s Decameron" and "Doomed family" and he created the Ustokos Magazine.
Between 1859 and 1904 he wrote and published many works as: "The Last Pasha in Buda", "Theatre Plays", "The New Squire", "Literary Models", "By the time we grow old", "Karas Marton’s Album", "Black diamonds", "The golden man", "The novel of the next century", "The Book without Name", "Milton", "The Greek Fire", "The Freedom under the Snow", "Ráby the prisoner", "Those Who Die Twice", "The Lady with the Eyes like the Sea", "Rakoczi’s Son", "The Yellow Rose" and "There Where the Money isn’t God".
Jokai Mor died on the 5th of May 1904 in Budapest.
