John Webster (c.1580-1634) ranks after Shakespeare as the greatest tragedian of his time, and is the Jacobean whose plays are most frequendy performed today.
His two great plays The White Devil in 1608 and The Duchess of Malfi in 1614 are dark, violent tragedies obsessed with death and decay and infused with poetic brilliance.
