John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1792-1878) entered the House of Commons in 1813, and supported Catholic emancipation and the Reform Bill. Short Biography:
He held cabinet posts 1830-1841, became prime minister 1846-1852, and was again a cabinet minister until becoming prime minister again 1865-1866. He retired after the defeat of his Reform Bill in 1866.
As foreign secretary in Aberdeen's coalition in 1852 and in Palmerston's second government 1859-1865, Russell assisted Italy's struggle for unity, although his indecisive policies on Poland, Denmark, and the American Civil War provoked much criticism. He had a strained relationship with Palmerston.
