John Leslie Prescott (born in 1938) was a former merchant seaman and trade-union official.
Short Biography:
He became member of Parliament for Hull East and, in 1975, a member of the European Parliament, despite being opposed to Britain's membership of the European Community.
A strong parliamentary debater and television performer, he is sometimes critical of his colleagues. In 1988 he unsuccessfully challenged Roy Hattersley for the deputy leadership.
