John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) was an inept First Lord of the Admiralty (1771-1782) during the American War of Independence, his corrupt practices being held to blame for the British navy's inadequacies.The Sandwich Islands were named after him, as are sandwiches, which he invented so that he could eat without leaving the gaming table.
