John Lilburne (1614-1657) was a English republican agitator. Short Biography:
He was imprisoned (1638-1640) for circulating Puritan pamphlets, fought in the Parliamentary army in the Civil War, and by his advocacy of a democratic republic won the leadership of the democratic Levellers.
He was twice tried for sedition and acquitted; nonetheless after his acquittal he was imprisoned (1653-1655).
