Joe was born December 9, 1961 to Virginia and Joseph Lando in Prairie View, Illinois. His sister Kathy who is ten years older than Joe, had been bugging her parents for a long time for a younger sibling and when Joe came along Kathy said "he was my baby." His grandmother lived with the family when Joe was growing up and it is she who encouraged his imagination.
"I was a loner as a kid. I loved pretending, and I was a big fan of Daniel Boone, so I ran around dressed up like him" says Joe. He is of Italian, Russian and Polish heritage. Joe Lando graduated Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois.
He started working as a cook in a Hollywood restaurant while taking acting lessons, his first acting role was as a patrolman in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. He got attention from
his role as Jake Harrison in the soap opera One Life to Live, and he moved to co-star in the popular drama Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman as Michaela Quinn's love interest, Byron Sully.
He has also appeared in the TV series The Guiding Light and Higher Ground; the latter he executive produced. He has also appeared in many films, such as Seeds of Doubt in 1996 and No Code of Conduct in 1998. He has also played a small part in the series Summerland next to Lori Loughlin.
Joe Lando married his wife, Kirsten Barlow, on May 24, 1997. The couple has four children: Jack Neville Lando was born on June 3, 1998, Christian Antonio Lando was born on July 7, 2001, Kate Elizabeth Lando born April 3, 2003, and William Joseph Landowas born on July 20, 2007.
