Joan Miro (1893-1983) was a Spanish Surrealist painter, born in Barcelona.
Short Biography:
In the mid-1920s he developed a distinctive abstract style with amoeba shapes, some linear, some highly coloured, generally floating on a plain ground.
During the 1930s his style became more sombre, and after World War II he produced larger abstracts.
He experimented with sculpture and printmaking and produced ceramic murals (for example in the UNESCO building, Paris in 1958). He also designed sets for the ballet director Diaghilev.
