Jennifer Nettles was born on September 12, 1974, in Douglas, Georgia. She was interested in rock, blues and gospel from an early age.
Biography and Career:
Jennifer sang at church gatherings and local venues from the age of 7. After completing her high school in 1992, she wrote songs for the Coffee Country High School Jazz Band.
While at Agnes Scott College, Jennifer started writing songs with her high school mate Cory Jones. They subsequently formed the band Soul Miner’s Daughter in 1995.
The Soul Miner’s Daughter released their debut album The Sacred and Profane in 1996 and the second album Hallelujah in 1998. In 1999, the band won the Lilith Fair Acoustic Talent Search at Georgia Tech and, then, played at the Atlanta leg of the same event.
After the duo separated,
Jennifer formed her own band under the name of The Jennifer Nettles Band. This time, her material included dark aspects, which is evident in her debut album Story of Your Bones. She received the Musician of the Year award from the Musician’s Atlas in 2000. She was also featured in the Atlanta City Mag, Jezebel Magazine and The Album Network. Following her debut success, she focused on releasing her next two albums. Along with that, Jennifer also released live versions of her performances on New Year’s Eve, recorder at Eddie’s Attic, Atlanta.
Consequently, she was approached by two songwriters – Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush, with the idea of forming a country band Sugarland in 2003. The music of Sugarland was amusing and positive. Their debut single “Baby Girl” reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. In 2005, Sugarland won the Favorite Breakthrough Artist at the American Music Awards. They also received a Grammy nomination.
Jennifer and Kristian released “Enjoy the Ride” in 2006 after Kristen Hall left the band. The album sold over a million copies. Even Good Morning America adapted one of the album’s tracks as their new theme song.
Following the success of Sugarland, she sung a duet with Bon Jovi, named “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?”. The song fired up the top spot on the Hot Country Singles chart and ranked 25th on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. In 2007, Jennifer Nettles received her maiden Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration.
Why is she famous?
Jennifer Nettles is famous as the singer of 3 bands – Soul Miner’s Daughter, The Jennifer Nettles Band and Sugarland. She is a Grammy winner and has sung the duet “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?” with Bon Jovi.
Here is one of her famous quotes:
"You just kind of go and do your own thing. Sometimes it's really hard to compare apples and oranges, so you don't really think of it that way. You just perform to your fullest potential and hope everybody else does too. And however it works out, it works out."
