Jean Francois Marmontel (1723-1799) wrote tragedies and libretti, and contributed to the Encyclopedic.
Short Biography:
In 1758 he obtained control of the journal Le Mercure/The Mercury, in which his Conies moraux/Moral Studies in 1761 appeared. Other works include Bitisaire/Belisanus (1767), and Les Incas/The Incas in 1777.
He was appointed historiographer of France in 1771, secretary to the Academe in 1783, and professor of history at the Lycee in 1786, but retired in 1792 to write his Memoires d'un pere/Memoirs of a Father in 1804.
