Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) was a British sculptor, born in New York.
He experimented with abstract forms, but is better known for muscular nude figures such as Genesis in 1931 (Wbitworth Art Gallery, Manchester).
In 1904 he moved to the UK, where most of his major work was done. An early example showing the strong influence of ancient sculptural styles is the angel over the tomb of Oscar Wilde in 1912 (Pere Lachaise, Paris), while Rock Drill 1913-1914 (Tate Gallery, London) is Modernist and semi-abstract. Such figures outraged public sensibilities.
