Ion Iliescu was born in March 3rd, 1930 in Oltenita, Romania. He is a Romanian politician.
Biography and Career :
Ion Iliescu was the president of Romania between 1990 - 1992, 1992 - 1996 and 2000 - 2004.
His father- Alexandru was an illegal communist that he participated at the Communist Party Congress in Gericovo, URSS. He remained in the Soviet Union another four years. When he returned to Romania he was convicted to prison (where he died).
When he was 9 years old, Ion Iliescu was adopted by his aunt- Aristita that would become Ana Pauker's maid and cooker. Ana Pauker was the one who helped Iliescu to be sent in Moscow to study at the Energetic Institute. Returned home, he occupied high functions in the communist nomenclature. He was among others the Minister of Youth
and he was in charge of the Communist Youth Union.
Ceausescu sent him far away from Bucharest and after 1971 he was adjunct-secretary of the P.C.R.'s District Committee in Timis and soon after in Iasi. From 1984 till 1989 he was the director of the Technique Publishing House. He was the founder of the National Salvation Front (Frontul Salvarii Nationale) that transformed into the National Democratic Salvation Front, after that into PDSR (Romania's Social Democracy Party) and later on into PSD (the Social Democratic Party).
Iliescu is a dominant figure of the after 1989 Romanian politic. He adopted a lot of social, political and economical reforms but he was also accused by his political adversaries of communist beliefs and of corruption.
In 2005 an investigation was started to establish Iliescu's role in the 1990 miner's riots leaded by Miron Cosma. He says that this thing is just revenge against him.
