Ioan Sabau (full name Ioan Ovidiu Sabau) was born on February 12, 1968 in Campia Turzii, Romania. He is an ex football player.
Biography and Career :
Ioan Sabau started is professional career at Universitatea Cluj and he played his first match in Liga 1 (the first Romanian league) on the 8th of March 1986.
After he played for Universitatea Cluj 3 seasons in 34 games and scored 4 times he went to ASA Targu-Mures for a half of season and in 12 games scored 2 times.
There, he was discovered by Mircea Lucescu the coach of Dinamo Bucharest who took him.
At Dinamo started his first climbing in his career: in 2 years here he played only in the championship in almost 50 games and scored 8 times. He won wi
th Dinamo first in 1989 vice-champion title and after one year in 1990 the champion title and the Romanian Cup.
In 1990 when Romanian football players could go in western Europe championships Ioan Sabau was transferred to Feyernoord Rotterdam where played 2 seasons in 39 games and scored 11 goals and succeeded to win 2 times the Holland Cup.
Beginning with the year 1992 Sabau followed his coach from Dinamo, Mircea Lucescu and played in Italy for Brescia Calcio and AC Reggiana and played only for Brescia more than 100 games. In 1997 he came back in Romania and with Mircea Lucescu signed for Rapid Bucharest. After they lost the champion title in 1998 in the last round they won it in 1999.
In 2000 Ioan Sabau left Rapid to came back and help his “soul team” Universitatea Cluj whish was in a desperate situation after felt in the third Romanian league. He helped them to return in the second league and he came back to Rapid Bucharest for another 2 seasons.
At the age of 34 Ioan Sabau became coach at Gaz Metan Medias in the second Romanian league where played as a football player 1 game. In the end he finished on the second place.
Ioan Sabau played in Cup Winners Cup 18 games, 3 in UEFA Cup and 1 in UEFA Champions League and scored 3 goals.
He played for Romanian National team 52 games and scored 8 goals. His first game was on the 3rd of February 1988 against Israel. He took part with Romania at World Cup Italia 1990 and at European Championship England 1996 but he lost the chance to be in USA in 1994 because of a severe injury.
Trivia :
- He won with Rapid another champion title and a Romanian Cup in 2002.
- He left the second league for Liga 1 and became coach at Gloria Bistrita.
