Ian Joseph Somerhalder was born December 8, 1978, in Covington, Louisiana, U.S. He is an American model, actor and producer.
Somerhalder is the son of Edna, a massage therapist, and Rober Somerhalder, an independent building contractor. He began his modeling career at the age of 10, until the age of 13, and by the age of 17 he decided to try acting.
Somerhalder starred in the short-lived WB series Young Americans, a spin-off of Dawson's Creek, in the summer of 2010. In the series he played the role of Hamilton Fleming, the son of the dean of a prestigious boarding school. Two years after, he played bisexual character Paul Denton inRoger Avary's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel, The Rules of Attraction, alongside James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, and Shannyn Sossamon.
In 2004
, Somerhalder rose to fame through the role of Boone Carlyle in the hit TV show Lost. Despite his character's death in the twentieth episode of the first season, Somerhalder returned to the role of Boone for seven more episodes, between 2005 and 2010, including the series finale.
Somerhalder was named one of DNA Models' Top 10 Male Models, in May 2006. He guest starred as Nick in HBO's Tell Me You Love Me, appearing fully nude in a sex scene with actress Michelle Borth. But unfortunately the show was cancelled after just one season.
He was the first celebrity to become actively involved in the cleanup after the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling disaster that occurred on April 22, 2010. Somerhalder also supports St. Tammany Humane Society, an organization for animal shelter and welfare.
