Hun Sen (born in 1950) was a Cambodian political leader, prime minister from 1985.
Short Biography:
Originally a member of the Khmer Rouge army, he defected in 1977 to join Vietnam-based anti-Khmer Cambodian forces.
Born into a poor peasant family in the eastern province of Kampang-Cham, Hun Sen joined the Khmer Rouge in 1970. He rose to become a regiment commander, but, disillusioned, defected to the anti-Khmer Cambodian forces in 1977.
On his return to Cambodia, following the Vietnamese-backed communist takeover, he served as foreign minister in 1979, and then as prime minister in 1985, promoting economic liberalization and a thawing in relations with exiled, non-Khmer, opposition forces as a prelude to a compromise political settlement.
