Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944) was a British sporting enthusiast. The Lonsdale Belts in boxing, first presented in 1909, are named after him.Short Biography:
Lonsdale, an expert huntsman, steeplechaser, boxer, and yachtsman, was notorious for extramarital affairs, and was ordered to leave Britain by Queen Victoria after a scandal with actress Violet Cameron.
As a result, he set off to the Arctic in 1888 for 15 months, travelling by boat and sleigh through North Canada to Alaska. The collection of Inuit (Eskimo) artefacts he brought back is now in the Museum of Mankind, London.
