Biography and career :
When she was nine years old she began taking piano lessons. She studied at the Carnegie Mellon University and graduated with a degree in drama. In 1980 she decided it was time to move to New York in order to become an actress.
After two years she was seen in "Crimes of the Heart" on Broadway. In 1987 she received the starring role in "Raising Arizona". This was the same year she appeared in "Broadcast News" and this role got her an Oscar nomination. She didn't give up and continued doing what she knew best. Finally she won the Best Actress Oscar with the role in "The Piano". Other movies where she was seen are "The Firm", "Thirteen", "The Incredibles" or "Savin
g Grace". She also won two Emmy Awards and other prizes confirming what a great actress she is. In 1999 she was one of the members of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
On May 20, 1995 she married Janusz Kaminski, but in December 2001 they got divorced. She has a relationship with Gordon MacDonald and in January 2006 they were parents of twin boys.
