Hiawatha is a legendary 16th-century North American Indian teacher and Onondiga chieftain, who is said to have welded the Six Nations of the Iroquois tribes into the league of the Long House, as the confederacy was known in what is now upper New York State. He is the hero of Longfellow's epic poem The Song of Hiawatha.
